Naan means bread, so I can't rightly say this is Naan bread (aka bread bread). A yeasty flat bread that goes perfectly with curries, yet my kids love it with tri-tip too! Extremely versatile bread! It's so easy to make this dough and wonderful for bbq.
Ingredients
4 cups flour, all-purpose or bread
2 tsp yeast, instant (if using regular use 2 packets)
2 tsp sugar
2 tsp salt
2 tsp garlic powder, optional but I highly recommend
1 1/3 cups water
1/4 cup vegetable oil/coconut oil or butter, melted
1/4 cup yogurt, plain
1 tbsp garlic powder
2-3 tbsp ghee/neutral oil for the grill
Instructions
Read Susie's Tips and Tricks below
1 . In a heavy-duty mixer place flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and garlic powder. Set aside.
2. In a microwave-safe measuring cup place water, vegetable oil and yogurt heat to 120F (if using regular yeast- 110F). Optionally you could heat up on the stove. (I have to have some use for the microwave besides heating up leftovers. :)
3. With machine on Stir mode slowly add oil/yogurt mixture to the dry flour mixture. Mix with the paddle until well-blended. Now switch to the Dough hook and set to Level 2. Let dough knead for 2-4 minutes. Stop occasionally and check to see if the dough is ready: squeeze firmly in your hand. It should release easily and not cling. Once dough is ready remove and spray oil in bowl and cover with plastic wrap for its first rise.
4. Once the dough has fully risen (poke test). Remove and divide evenly as possible. Approximately six (6) pieces of naan. Do more if desired. I like to cut off a piece of dough with a knife and then use a rolling pin to flatten (approx 8"); it won't lie 100% flat or be completely circular. That's okay! It will taste wonderful anyway. You may brush the naan with a bit of ghee or oil then place on a hot griddle, or even a bbq. They will puff and brown approximately 3 mins per side. Sprinkle the garlic powder on if desired.
Susie's Tips and Tricks
You can half this recipe. One time I made the dough, set it in the cooler and prepared the bread on our boat that had a bbq. It was awesome!
Ghee is merely clarified butter; that has been simmered after the whey is separated to give it a nutty, aromatic flavor.
