Apple Fritter Bake

This is good; very good. The casserole comes together with some pre-made croissants, fresh apples, a glaze similar to the one found at the donut store! I'm thinking this would be an outstanding holiday treat for breakfast morning.

Ingredients

  • 6 tbsp butter

  • 5-6 cups peeled and chopped apples, approx 1/2" pcs

  • 1 c firmly packed brown sugar

  • 1 tsp cinnamon, (optional)

  • 12 oz croissants, cut in half ( approximately 4 large, or 5 medium)

  • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten

  • 1/2 cup half & half or evaporated milk

  • 1/2 cup apple sauce or apple butter

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Milk glaze:

  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar

  • 3-4 tbsp milk

Instructions

Please read Susie's Tips and Tricks

1. Prepare the apples. Dice in small pieces.

2. Preheat oven to 375F.

3. Melt butter in a large skillet. Add apples and let soften 3-5 minutes on medium heat. Add brown sugar and let the apples cook a bit more; they should soften slightly but not be mushy. Sprinkle with a bit of cinnamon if desired. Mix cornstarch and water together and mix into the apples.

4. Remove from heat; draining the syrup from the apples and place in separate containers and set aside.

5. Place sliced croissant bottom buns in a 13X9 pan.

6. In a medium measuring cup with a spout whisk together milk or cream, eggs, apple sauce, cinnamon, and vanilla.

7. Drizzle half of this egg mixture on the croissants.

8. Arrange the chopped apples on the eggy bread.

9. Now place the croissant tops (upside down) on the base you made.

10. Drizzle the remaining egg mixture on top of the croissants.

11. Again spread the apple bits on the eggy bread. Now use the apple syrup that you had set aside and drizzle over the mixture.

12. Place in the middle rack in the oven and bake 25 minutes until lightly browned.

13. While the apple fritter casserole bakes; prepare the milk glaze and or the apple glaze. I did both! See notes below for instructions to make the apple glaze.

14. After removing from the oven drizzle the milk glaze all over the breakfast treat. If desired you can also do the apple glaze.

Susie‘s Tips and Tricks

You can prep this dish ahead by sautéing the apple mixture. Place in the fridge and proceed as usual.

A maple glaze is also a wonderful thing.

Apple glaze:

Combine in a small saucepan: 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup butter, and 1/2 cup apple juice. Cook over medium heat until thickened.
